GillMapping

After finishing with GENESIS 09, it was an other excitement to handle a new project namely – GillMapping just the very next day. The project was organized by Dr HS Rai, Head of Civil Engineering Department with a joint effort of ACE (Association of Civil Engineers) and LUG (Linux User Group) consisting of 32 students and 4 professors all from Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College itself.

Beginning with the day, Dr Rai conducted a seminar based on introduction & advantages of GPS technology and Open Street Mapping, including speeches from other renowned persons Mr. GPS Walia from Jai Prakash Associates, Dr. Deepak Bhatti from Christian Medical College, Er. Pritpal Singh, a renowned traffic consultant who also runs a NGO named PATH (People And Their Hope) S. Gurmail Singh Sangowal & S. Gurcharan Singh of Nankana Sahib Education Trust.

The event and the real fun begun after we landed in field. I had to work to plot pathways and boundaries of our college with my team-mate Aman Sehgal. Holding a GPS device in hand we moved along the college boundaries & pathways, mapping 100 Acre of land ! Unimaginable we spent about 4 hours and we didn’t notice a single minute how the time passed out.

Talking about future plans, Dr. Rai said, “We have thought of starting this project from Gill village and thereafter the entire city will be covered. We are even planning to move on to big cities like Patiala. But initially, our focus would be on villages.”

GENESIS 09

The entire month had been quite eventful for me, both academically as well as non-academically with a plethora of assignments on the academic side. On the non-academic side, I was involved in the organization for the GENESIS and also some work for the alumni. Talking about the fest from various scenarios, it polished my way of management with the power to fight with politics and corruption being held at student level. As it always happens with me in life – something worse happens, then sooner or later the same results Excellent for me and same happened again this GENESIS.

Starting with the website, http://www.gnefest09.co.cc was designed and maintained by me, in co-operation with some of my seniors which was entirely unofficial. The entire stuff was going good as usual and suddenly I got a call from college authorities to meet them regarding the website, as I visited them I was shocked to receive the order to delete http://www.gnefest09.co.cc immediately. I felt my labor and the time spent on it wasted. On the other hand I was running a project of making GNE a carbon neutral campus. Both of them made my mind to really burst at some time.

Going back to the website, I was  given the responsibility to handle a new website on the college domain which was to be unitedly maintained by a committee and as I never did before – Team Work stuff was new to me. The worry was to loose the present dignity and the entire output to be left uncredited. Team spirit really works wonder ! As I never expected how good it will prove for me & the appreciations I got from the college authorities boosted my morale.

Inspite of getting trained to design a perfect website like www.gndec.ac.in/genesis :) what I learnt beside it was more beneficiary. Learning from the tact of  “a decision unchanged, once decided in a meeting” to “act as a manager” with the “ability to fight with politics”. Moreover my joint effort in John Bull & Pictizement also added more fun to my experience.

Apart from my involvement in GENESIS, it was memorable moment to enjoy the concert of Preet Harpal & Sippy Gill.

I am thankful to all organizers who helped making GENESIS 09 big success !!
